Trent Move-In Sunday 2025: A Landlord & Parent Survival Guide
Short version: Trent University’s official Residence Move-In is Sunday, August 31, 2025, generally 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Orientation events kick off right after, and Labour Day is Monday, September 1 (aka recovery day).
At-a-glance: key dates & timing
-
Move-In Day: Sunday, Aug 31, 2025 (Peterborough & Durham). Students choose a check-in timeslot in the Housing Portal (Aug 6–13).
-
Move-In window: Typically 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (watch your Housing Portal/email for your exact slot).
-
Labour Day: Mon, Sept 1, 2025 (campus services & city services operate on holiday schedules).
For parents: what to do before you hit the driveway
-
Confirm your timeslot + route. Print or screenshot your Housing Portal check-in details so you know which entrance, “key tent,” and drop-zone to use. (Housing prompts all this in August.)
-
Pack like a pro. Clear, stackable bins > fragile boxes; label every side with student name/college/room.
-
Tools to toss in the trunk: tape gun, utility knife, power bar, zip ties, painter’s tape, doorstop, small toolkit, microfiber cloths, and a rolling bin/dolly.
-
What not to bring: candles, hot plates, and other heat sources are typically restricted—double-check the residence guidelines.
-
Parking expectations. Plan for a quick unload, then park in the directed lot. Campus parking rules apply; on city streets the default limit is max 3 hours unless signed otherwise.
For landlords nearby: keep move-in day smooth (and your tenants happy)
-
Set a “staging zone.” Use cones/chalk to mark a 15–20-minute unload space at the curb or top of drive (if safe). Remind movers that city streets have a 3-hour cap unless posted otherwise.
-
Traffic note for multi-unit homes. Stagger arrivals (e.g., 10:00, 11:30, 1:00) to avoid driveway gridlock.
-
Noise & neighbour etiquette. Peterborough’s noise by-law prohibits noise “likely to disturb” residents – keep music/mods low, especially early morning/evening.
-
Waste plan (boxes & packaging). The City collects recycling if it’s in approved blue boxes (not random cardboard tubs), set out after 6 p.m. the night before and by 7 a.m. on collection day. Flatten boxes and keep each bin under ~50 lb (22 kg). For large, non-collectible items, schedule a large-item pickup.
-
Do a condition walk-through. Provide an inventory & move-in checklist (photos + serial numbers). Have tenants note scuffs, screens, bulbs, filters, and CO/smoke alarms on Day 1.
-
Welcome sheet = fewer texts. One page with Wi-Fi info, garbage/recycling day, furnace filter size, water shut-off, and your preferred maintenance request method.
The day-of game plan (parents & students)
1) Arrive at your scheduled time. It reduces lineups and helps Parking & Housing keep things moving. (Trent Housing uses timeslots specifically for flow.)
2) Unload fast—then move the car. Expect an unload zone → park & return routine. Campus Parking can answer questions if you’re unsure where to go.
3) Pack it in, break it down. As you set up the room, flatten cardboard and stage recyclables so your student can put them out correctly after move-in. (Blue boxes only—no random containers.)
4) Respect the neighbours. Keep sidewalks clear, watch for bus routes, and keep music/conversation levels reasonable—remember the city’s noise rules apply.
5) Give them space to “start.” Orientation begins immediately; let your student jump into their schedule and meet their college community.
Parking cheat sheet
-
On campus: Follow Trent’s posted signage for drop-zones and lots; questions go to Parking Services.
-
On city streets: If there are no signs, the default is max 3 hours, 24/7. Do not stop/park in No Stopping zones or too close to intersections.
Waste & recycling quick wins (post-move chaos)
-
Cardboard: Flatten and place in blue boxes; keep each box under ~50 lb. Set out after 6 p.m. the night before and by 7 a.m. collection day.
-
Garbage: Clear bags required for curbside collection; renovation materials (drywall, tile, wood) aren’t accepted – book a large-item pickup or depot run.
FAQ
Is Move-In definitely Sunday, Aug 31, 2025?
Yes – Trent lists Move-In on Aug 31; Orientation events also show that date with an 8 a.m.–4 p.m. window.
Do students choose their check-in time?
Yes – Housing assigns/opens timeslot selection in August via the Housing Portal (Aug 6–13 this year).
Can I just park on the street all day?
Not quite. Unless signed otherwise, the city’s default is max 3 hours. Plan to unload quickly and move to designated parking.
