Pickleball Pandemic? More like Pickleball Press!

If it feels like everyone in Peterborough suddenly owns a pickleball paddle… you’re not wrong. Our city has officially caught the pickleball bug – and it’s not just a trend, it’s a full-blown movement. Between brand-new outdoor courts, boutique indoor clubs, and year-round leagues, Peterborough’s become one of the best places in Ontario to grab your paddle and play.

Let’s talk about where the action’s happening, what’s new at Bonnerworth Park, and how to get in on the fun (even if you’ve never played before).

🌳 Bonnerworth Park: Peterborough’s New Pickleball Hub

Meet the star of the show – Bonnerworth Park, at 560 McDonnel Street.

After a full-scale makeover, the park now features 14 brand-new outdoor pickleball courts, including two accessible courts designed for players of all abilities. The new layout also includes a bike pump track, an expanded skatepark, and over 60% green space to keep things lush and inviting.

Now, if you followed the city chatter last year, you’ll know this project didn’t come without drama. The original plan called for 16 lit courts and a big parking lot – but locals pushed back over noise, lighting, and green space. After plenty of debate (and more than a few heated council meetings), the city scaled back to 14 courts, added berms and trees for sound buffering, and made it more community-friendly overall.

Fast-forward to today: the grand opening is complete, and Bonnerworth is officially Peterborough’s go-to outdoor pickleball destination. Expect organized play, social leagues, and lots of laughter once programming ramps up again through the Peterborough Pickleball Association.

If you drive by on a sunny day, don’t be surprised to see every court full -this place is the new social hub of the city.

❄️ Where to Play Year-Round: Peterborough’s Indoor Pickleball Clubs

Because let’s be real – pickleball season shouldn’t end when the snow flies. Thankfully, Peterborough’s got some fantastic indoor options too:

🏸 Smash Courts

📍 799 Erskine Ave, Peterborough

This one’s for the serious (and seriously addicted) players. Smash Courts is a 24/7 indoor pickleball facility with up to 12 courts, a pro-shop, and leagues for every level. They even have a paddle demo and rental program, plus a full-on pickleball retail store that carries everything from paddles to Lululemon gear.

If you’re looking for a club that feels like part gym, part community, part retail therapy – this is it.

✨ Pickle & Pin

Think of it as the boutique version of pickleball. With four cushioned courts, structured games, lessons, and social nights, Pickle & Pin is built for anyone who loves quality, community, and good vibes. Whether you’re playing for cardio or cocktails after, you’ll fit right in.

💪 Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre

📍 775 Brealey Drive, Peterborough

A classic community option with four indoor courts, portable nets, and drop-in play. Great for casual players or anyone already using the Wellness Centre.

🌤 Bubble on 28 – Playground East

📍 7939 Highway 7, east of Peterborough

Four indoor wood courts with all the amenities – lighting, locker rooms, and easy parking. It’s perfect if you live on the east side or want a lower-key spot to hit the court.

🏆 Join the Peterborough Pickleball Association

If you’re new to the sport (or just looking for people to play with), start with the Peterborough Pickleball Association (PPA). They organize everything from skill-level sessions to social games, and they’ll be moving their programming to the new Bonnerworth complex once it’s fully ready.

It’s the easiest way to get plugged into the local pickleball scene – and meet some great people along the way.

💡 Carrie’s Pickleball Starter Tips

  1. Try both indoor and outdoor play – Bonnerworth for sunshine, Smash Courts for consistency.

  2. Borrow a paddle first. Test before you invest.

  3. Join a clinic or league – even if you’re brand-new. The community is super welcoming.

  4. Make it social! Bring your friends, your partner, even your clients.

  5. Share your game. Post that selfie, tag your location, and use #LivingInPeterborough – it’s all part of the fun.

🏡 Why Pickleball Matters (Even in Real Estate)

Here’s the thing – this isn’t just about the game. It’s about lifestyle.

Pickleball has quickly become a symbol of what makes Peterborough so special: active, community-driven, and connected. For people relocating from the GTA, that balance of recreation and lifestyle is a big deal.

So, whether you’re here to play, move, or just enjoy watching the action from the sidelines – welcome to Peterborough’s pickleball era.
