Otonabee–South Monaghan is a township in central-eastern Ontario, Canada, in Peterborough County. The township, located along the Trent–Severn Waterway, was formed on January 1, 1998, through the amalgamation of Otonabee and South Monaghan Townships. This township is located just outside Peterborough, Ontario.
Otonabee South-Monaghan is nestled in the heart of the Kawarthas, where the rolling drumlin hills meet the scenic waters of Rice Lake and the Otonabee River. This rural township, formed by the amalgamation of Otonabee and South Monaghan townships in 1998, boasts a rich agricultural heritage that continues to thrive today.
The region played a significant role in early Canadian settlement, with the Rice Lake Plains being home to Indigenous peoples long before European arrival. The area became particularly important during the 1800s when the Otonabee River served as a crucial transportation route for lumber and agricultural products. The historic Lang Pioneer Village, established in 1967, now stands as a testament to the region’s settler history and early industrial development.
The township is characterized by its fertile farmland, pristine natural areas, and waterfront communities like Lang and Keene. From the Lang-Hastings Trail, a repurposed rail line perfect for hiking and cycling, to the numerous conservation areas and wetlands that dot the landscape, the region offers abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation while maintaining its strong agricultural roots.
Keene has a school of approximately 600 students called North Shore Public School. This school is the main elementary school for families in Keene, as well as those on outlying farms. North Shore is a feeder school for Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School.
